Our Story
Growing up in Chicago is no easy task, especially without the right tools to navigate its challenges.
Founder Clifford Yates was blessed to be raised by two loving parents and surrounded by a strong village that emphasized education, spirituality, community, and family. Influenced by his Uncle Clifford and Aunt Nettie — both pillars of faith and service — Clifford learned early what it meant to live with purpose, respect others, and give back.
For over 18 years, Clifford has worked with young people in grammar schools, high schools, alternative schools, and juvenile facilities. In that work, he saw a common thread: many young men struggled with literacy, confidence, and self-expression — leading to deeper challenges like anger, frustration, and lack of motivation.
BROS was born from Clifford’s commitment to close those gaps.
Through reading circles, life skills workshops, mentorship, and culturally relevant programming, BROS helps young men discover their voice, unlock their potential, and become leaders in their communities.
Our Mission
To inspire and elevate young Black boys through literacy, mentorship, and culturally rooted experiences — empowering them to thrive academically and beyond.
Working with youth isn’t just what I do — it’s who I am. BROS is my way of making sure the next generation of young Black men have what they need to thrive. Together, we are not just teaching reading skills, we are building leaders.
